The History of Kolpinghaus Mannheim
The youth hostel Kolpinghaus Mannheim e.V. was built between 1954 and 1958. It served young people as a substitute for a missing parental home. Only by grants from the National Youth Plan the new building of the Kolpinghaus was made possible in R 7.
Today, the Kolpinghaus provides a youth hostel dormitory and a total of 125 people of different nationalities priced and functional accommodation. Particularly advantageous is the central location of the house in the squares. Shops, snack bars and restaurants are within walking distance. The station and the nearest tram and bus stop are close by. Cinema, theater and swimming pool are all within five minutes.
In addition to the local Kolpinghaus seven other houses of this kind exist in most cities in Baden-Württemberg, as well as in many other states and abroad.
The basic idea of these houses, by the federation of the Kolpinghäuser e.V. which are united in the Kolpingwerk, is based on the ideas of the journeyman’s father Adolph Kolping (1813–1865).
